Jaggie Zhang is a contemporary Chinese composer who specialises in composing music for acoustic instruments, religious music, experimental music, electronics and other interdisciplinary collaborations. She is committed to incorporating the musical colours of the ethnic minorities of her homeland (Southern Fujian) and Buddhist music into her work.
She has studied composition with French composer Marc Battier and Professor Cai Jianchun at the Central Conservatory of Music at Shenzhen University in China. She is pursuing a master's degree in
Composition at the Royal College of Music in London under the tutelage of Alison Kay.
Jaggie Zhang has had the opportunity to collaborate with various musicians, including the Shenzhen University Orchestra, the China Minnan Folk Orchestra Project, the Fidelio Trio, and the Explore Ensemble. Her debut trio work, White Tunic, was performed at the Shenzhen Concert Hall and won Third Prize in the 2021 Canadian Rocky Mountain Music Festival Competition. She performed at the Centenary Gallery in London in 2023 with other musicians, including experimental musician Neil Luck. She performed with students from the Lambert School as part of a collaborative programme in dance and composition offered by the Royal College of Music in 2024.
Jaggie Zhang is passionate about installation and visual art; she has also collaborated with visual artists from the Florence Academy of Fine Arts and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and has experimented with combining elements of ethnic minority music and Buddhist music from the southern region of Minnan, China, with digital media art, to create a new kind of visualised musical work. She will continue her research and creation in this direction.
