CEME (Contemporary Encounters by Meitar Ensemble) Festival and Master Course, a unique platform for the promotion of contemporary music, was established with the aim of engaging young musicians with the latest developments in the field of New Music. For the CEME 2022 edition, we are highly proud and honoured to welcome, for her first visit ever to Israel, the renowned composer Unsuk Chin.

The Berlin based South-Korean Unsuk Chin, who is often regarded as one of the leading composers of our time, is the winner of many prestigious awards and is regularly performed by the world’s leading ensembles and orchestras. With Meitar’s new composer-in-residence Mauro Lanza, in his first ever visit to Israel as well, Chin and Lanza will take charge of the CEME 2022 composition class, and offer composition lessons to the participating students.

During a week of intensive work, the CEME 2022 participating students, together with the members of Meitar and the festival’s guests, will discuss and examine current issues of New Music creation and performance. The visiting guests and the musicians of Meitar will share with the participants their views and vast knowledge while working together with the students on the new compositions to be written by the students for CEME. The new compositions by the students will be then, in turn, performed and recorded by the musicians of Meitar in the festival’s concerts.

After the success of last year’s online edition, which took place exclusively online due to the limitations imposed by the Coronavirus pandemic, this year’s course will be operating in hybrid form. In addition to the visiting students who will travel to Israel, full remote online participation in the course will be made possible also this year. Students who are remotely located, will receive private composition lessons through Zoom, take part in workshops and have their pieces rehearsed, performed and recorded - all to be carried out online.
