The spatial metaphor of pitch is very well established in discourse about music; certain melodies are heard to go "up", others "down". This piece uses a basic contour network (2,1,3,0), and radically warps it repeatedly, in different ways, to disrupt and transform that traditional metaphor. These processes are mediated through an emphasis on a restricted set of 'vertical' trichords, and through oblique references to compositional techniques associated with the Christian church, like fugue and canon.
