Yuri Demetz is an Italian composer currently in the final stages of completing his Master's degree at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Leipzig, under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Fabien Lévy.
In 2019, he completed his piano studies with Deniz Gelenbe at the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance in London, where he was also studying composition with Douglas Finch and Amir Konjani.
Prior to that, Yuri studied piano performance at the Conservatorio "Monteverdi" in Bolzano with Luca Schieppati, Davide Cabassi, and Miroslav Zgaga.
Yuri's approach is characterised by his strive to write music that is visceral and can have a direct impact on the listener, without shying away from humorous or even grotesque elements. At times he consciously and purposefully delves into musical clichés that can have a significant effect on the emotive impact and the expressivity of his music. This way of writing music partly comes as a result of Yuri’s deep interest in rock and metal music and his past involvement in various such bands.
Throughout recent years, Yuri has had the opportunity to collaborate with numerous ensembles or orchestras, such as the MDR-Sinfonieorchester with conductor Michael Wendeberg, the ATEM Ensemble, the Ensemble Suono Giallo, the Contemporary Insights Ensemble, or the Fabrik Quartet.
