Mert Moralı (b.1992) is a Berlin-based composer, originally from Izmir, Turkey. His oeuvre consists of music for diverse chamber groups in different sizes ranging from solo to sinfonietta, music for the stage, and electroacoustic music. As a former flautist, Moralı has a immense appreciation for the classical musicianship. His musical aesthetics are based on topics such as contemporary interpretation, musical expression and critical historical consciousness. His work focuses on two principal themes: the notion of text in a broader sense as a structural basis for creating musical composition; Marxist theory as an intellectual means for artistic inspiration.

Moralı has been commissioned by ensembles including ensemble proton bern, Georg Katzer Ensemble, Klasik Keyifler Music Society and modern art ensemble. Additionally, his music has been performed by ensembles such as Ensemble Dal Niente, Ensemble KNM Berlin, Ensemble mise-en, Hezarfen Ensemble, Sigma Project, United Instruments of Lucilin and many distinguished musicians.

His piece for Die Produktion des Bewusstseins for soprano and trumpet has received first prize in duo category of the competition organised within the frame of Wilde Lieder Marx.Music (2018) project by Birmingham Contemporary Music Group and Verein zur Förderung des Jubiläumsprogramms Trier, as a part of event series for the 200th anniversary of birth year of Karl Marx.

Moralı’s works have been heard at international festivals such as (Seoul), Bilgi Music Festival (Istanbul), Bilkent New Music Days (Ankara), Forum Neue Musik (Berlin), Klangwerkstatt (Berlin), Mixtur Festival (Barcelona), Neuköllner Originaltöne (Berlin), protonwerk no.8 (Bern & Basel), Red Note New Music Festival (Normal, IL), and Ultraschall (Berlin).

He holds Bachelor’s degrees in Theory-Composition from Bilkent University and in Composition from “Hanns Eisler” Berlin School of Music. During his studies, he has been at Music Conservatoire of Vigo and Royal Academy of Music, London as an exchange student. His principal composition instructors include Tolga Yayalar, Wolfgang Heiniger, and Eun-Hwa Cho, and he has attended workshops such as Chigiana Music Academy, Divertimento Ensemble International Workshop for Young Composers, and Luxembourg Composition Academy, working with many prominent composers.

Currently, he is pursuing his Master’s degree in Composition at “Hanns Eisler” Berlin School of Music.
