Ángel de la Hera (2002) is a Spanish composer and sound artist. He began his musical journey studying piano before advancing to organ and composition in his hometown. Early in his career, he served as a rehearsal pianist for choirs and opera companies. In 2021, he started studying composition at the Madrid Royal Conservatory under José María Sánchez-Verdú. He is currently pursuing a double specialization in Composition and Sonology, mentored by Julián Ávila and Alberto Bernal. Aditionally, he has received masterclasses and lessons from Chaya Czernowin, Alberto Posadas, Isabel Mundry, Fabián Panisello, Elena Mendoza, Mauricio Sotelo or Gabriele Manca, amongst others.
He has been a student of the workshops of Composition and Sound Experimentation at Mixtur Festival (Barcelona) in 2023 and 2024. Furthermore, he has been an active composer at the Manuel de Falla Chair of Composition and Musical Analysis in 2024. Also, he has attended several music specialization courses at the International Festival of Music and Dance of Granada in the editions 2022, 2023 and 2024; La Casa Encendida (Madrid); or Universidad Autónoma (Madrid).
In 2023, he won the II Teatro de la Zarzuela-RCSMM Composition Contest for his work Todo es Posible en el Agua. This work was premiered at the Zarzuela Theater (Madrid) on 12th June 2023 by Arbós Trío. Also that year he was awarded by SGAE Foundation's Creation Incentives for his work 3 Miradas Flamencas Contemporáneas. This work was premiered on 26th May 2022 at the National Museum Reina Sofía (Madrid).
During the Mixtur Festival in 2023, he premiered a miniature for accordion, Luz(ifer), played by accordionist Olga Morral.
In 2023 he also premiered El Romance de las Sombras y el Artista, during the XXI Festival of Spanish Music of Cádiz. This work was a collaborative pedaggical project between several music institutions in Cádiz. Alongside composer Manuel Rosal, the result was a contemporary 80-minute ballet with orchestra, singers and fixed-media electronics.
In 2024 he premiered dumb-scrolling during the XXII Festival of Spanish Music of Cádiz, for small ensemble and fixed-media electronics. It was premiered at Cádiz on 18th November by Ensemble Taller Sonoro. That year he also premiered Saturno, a work for solo Double Bass, orchestra, fixed-media electronics and poem by Tamia Olga Cáceres. It was an interdisciplinary work, based on both the poem and Goya's painting Saturn Devouring His Son. The premiere was on September the 20th.
Currently he is finishing writing a small opera set to be premiered in April 2025 at the Royal Theater of Retiro (Madrid), programmed by Teatro Real. This is his final project for the Composition's bachelor, and it is a collaboration bewtween the Royal Higher College of Performing Arts, Escuela Superior de Canto de Madrid, and the Madrid Royal Conservatory.
He has also been selected for the Music Biennale Zagreb as an active composer for the 33 MBZ Masterclass for Composers, and will premiere his work Sostener el Sol during the festival in April 2025. It will be premiered by Ensemble PinkNoise. Aditionally, this project will have an installation piece to be premiered at the International Festival of Santander, during an exhibition alongside sculptor and artist José Luis Vicario.
His last project for the first part of the year is an orchestral work based on paintings by Soledad Sevilla. This work called Trampantojo will be premiered during the RESIS Festival in Galicia on May 2025, as a part of Obradoiro de Composición de Obras Sinfónicas. This work will be premiered by conductor Jordi Francés and Real Filharmonía de Galicia.
