The Académie Voix Nouvelles (New Voices) is open to composers and performers wishing to hone their skills in the interpretation of the contemporary repertory.
For composers, it recreates the complete process of creation of a new work, in professional conditions: commission, composition, rehearsals, concert, under the supervision of internationally renowned tutors belonging to different aesthetics. It calls on the leading ensembles to rehearse and perform the works and to advise and interact with the composers.
The performers will benefit from the advice of the expert musicians of the guest ensembles in individual classes rehearsing chamber or solo repertory. They will make up an ensemble that will rehearse and perform in concert emblematic works from the contemporary literature as well as some of the work produced by the composers of the workshop.
In its duration and its exceptional working conditions, the academy constitutes a unique forum for exchanges between composers, performers and thinkers. Several specialists in the domains of management, musical production economics, author rights, the record industry, radio and journalism will also be invited.
PHILIPPE HUREL (France, 1955)
Philippe Hurel was born in 1955. French composer of mostly orchestral and chamber works that have been performed throughout Europe and elsewhere. Philippe Hurel studied musicology at the Université de Toulouse from 1974-79 and composition with Betsy Jolas and Ivo Malec at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris from 1980-83. He also had private studies in musical computer science with Tristan Murail in Paris in 1983. His honors include the Pensionnaire à la Villa Médicis à Rome (1986-88), the Förderpreis der Siemens-Stiftung in Munich 1995, for Six miniatures en trompe l'œil, the Prix des Compositeurs from SACEM (2002), and the Prix de la Meilleure Création de l'Année from SACEM 2003, for Aura. Mr. Hurel is also active in other positions. He worked as a music researcher at IRCAM in 1985-86 and 1988-89. He taught composition at IRCAM from 1997-2001. He also served as composer-in-residence to both the Arsenal de Metz and the Philharmonie de Lorraine from 2000-02. With Pierre André Valade he founded the new music ensemble Court-circuit in 1990 and has since served as its artistic director. Since 2013 he teaches composition at the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse de Lyon.
ALBERTO POSADAS (Espagne, 1967)
Alberto Posadas was born in Valladolid (Spain) in 1967. After his studies in his hometown, he moved to Madrid to study composition with Francisco Guerrero.
From his first works he showed interest in the relationship between music, nature and mathematics as a means of exogenous models applying to the composition process. Nonetheless, his determination and constant search for the integration of aesthetics in these procedures led him to employ other “models” of composing such as the translation of architectural spaces into music, the application of topology and painting techniques or the exploration of the acoustic features of instruments at a micro level.
Since 1991, Alberto Posadas has taught analysis, harmony and composition at the Palencia Conservatoire first and later at the Mahadahonda Conservatoire in Madrid. Since 2014 he has taught composition at Master de Composición Instrumental Contemporánea at Centro Superior de Enseñanza Musical Katarina Gurska (Madrid, Spain). He was invited as composition professor to Session de Composition à Royaumont (France) in 2012, Takefu International Music Festival (Japan) in 2013, Académie de composition Philippe Manoury at MUSICA Festival Strasbourg (France) in 2016.
MAURO LANZA (Italie, 1975)
Mauro Lanza studied piano and composition at the conservatory of his home town. He completed his studies when he attended the annual course of composition and computer music from 1998 to 1999 at IRCAM in Paris. Tingled with irony, his compositions are the result of an ever increasing effort towards an intimate fusion of classical instruments with other less conventional sound sources: physical modeling synthesis, toy instruments, noisemakers, various specimens of “objets trouvés“ and custom-made machineries such as the rain machine employed in “Le nubi non scoppiano per il peso” (2011), or the augmented house-appliances in “Regnum Animale“ (2013) and “Regnum Vegetabile“ (2014), pieces composed in collaboration with Andrea Valle.
In 2014 Italy’s National Association of Music Critics awarded him the prestigious Franco Abbiati Prize in the category “best creation“.
Praised by the NYTimes for their “excellence, poise and precision,” the Meitar Ensemble, founded in 2004 by artistic director Amit Dolberg, has established itself as a prominent array of virtuosos specializing in contemporary music. Based in Tel¬ Aviv, they have been featured at some of the most prestigious venues worldwide, including the Centre Pompidou (Paris), the Purcell Room (London), the Radial System and BKA (Berlin), the Moscow Conservatory, Yale University, the 92Y (NYC), the Venice Biennale for Contemporary Music, Heidelberger Frueling Festival, Sound Ways festival St. Petersburg and more. They have held residencies at MATA festival (NY), Dartmouth University, and the Zeitkunst Festival in Berlin, and are the ensemble in residence at the Israel Conservatory of Music, Tel Aviv. Over the past ten years they have commissioned and premiered over 200 new works. They regularly collaborate with renowned composers including Fabian Panisello, Mark Andre, Walter Zimmermann, Philippe Leroux (composer in residence), Matthias Pintscher, Daniel Peter Biro, Ivan Fedele, Chaya Czernowin, Vladimir Tarnopolsky, Giya Kancheli and many Israeli leading composers. The fruits of many of these partnerships can be heard on the Spanish recording label VERSO, the American label Albany, the Israeli Music Institute label and more. They have been acclaimed for their significant contribution to the development of Israeli culture and music, receiving the Binyaminy Award (2006), Partosh Award (2008), and the Landau Award (2010). Winners of the Silver Palm award for Best Documentary at the 2010 Mexico International Film Festival for their historical performance at the Wannsee Vila, ""Am Grossen Wannsee ¬ The Wannsee Recordings"", directed by Emre Amram Sonmez. The Meitar Ensemble has initiated a unique educational youth program, the Tedarim Project, offering young musicians in all fields (performance, conducting and composing) an opportunity to learn, explore and perform new music at the highest level. A special program for children ""What's that noise?”» contemporary music for the whole family has won great success and claimed many praises. In addition the ensemble has established CEME, New Music Festival and Master Courses for young professional musicians. Among their visiting guests are Ivan Fedele, Philippe Leroux, Fabian Panisello, Pierre André Valade and Ensemble Modern members and more.
EXAUDI is one of the world’s leading vocal ensembles for new music. Founded by James Weeks (director) and Juliet Fraser (soprano) in 2002, EXAUDI is based in London and draws its singers from among the UK’s brightest vocal talents.
EXAUDI’s special affinity is for the radical edges of contemporary music, at home equally with maximal complexity, microtonality and experimental aesthetics and championing particularly the music of its own generation and that of emerging composers. EXAUDI has performed at most of the major venues and festivals across the UK and Europe, broadcasts regularly on BBC Radio 3 and European radio stations, and has released twelve critically acclaimed recordings on the NMC, ÆON, Métier, Winter&Winter, Mode, Confront and HCR labels. It has premiered works by many of today's leading composers, including Ferneyhough, Gervasoni, Wolff, Finnissy, Pesson, Posadas, Aaron Cassidy and Cassandra Miller among many others.
EXAUDI is also expert in the music of the Renaissance and early Baroque, and its critically-acclaimed EXAUDI Italian Madrigal Book project, founded in 2012 and pairing Renaissance Italian repertoire with newly-commissioned contemporary madrigals, forms a major strand of their current work.
PIERRE-ANDRE VALADE, CONDUCTOR
Pierre-André Valade was born in Corrèze, France in 1959. In 1991 he co-founded the Paris based Ensemble Court-Circuit of which he was Music Director for 16 years until 2008. He was Principal Conductor of Athelas Sinfonietta Copenhagen from 2009 to 2014. He currently has an active career as a guest conductor whilst continuing his relationship with Athelas Sinfonietta Copenhagen as a regular guest conductor. He was also appointed Principal Guest Conductor of Lyon based Ensemble Orchestral Contemporain in 2013 and has held the position of Conductor in Residence at the Meitar Ensemble in Tel-Aviv since 2014.
He is especially admired for his performances of repertoire from the 20th and 21st centuries, and receives regular invitations from major festivals and orchestras in Europe, the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Japan. Of his many recordings, Grisey’s Les Espaces Acoustiques has been singled out for particular praise and won both the Diapason d’or de l’année 1999 and the Grand Prix de l’Académie Charles Cros, which he won again in 2008 for three other recordings. His more recent CDs include works by Hugues Dufourt (winner Diapason d’Or and Choc du Monde de la Musique), and Harrison Birtwistle’s Theseus Game for Deutsche Grammophon, a piece he premiered in Duisburg and conducted at the Southbank Centre, BBC Proms, Huddersfield Festival, Lucerne International Festival and in Berlin.
Current and future highlights include his debut with La Scala Orchestra in Milan as well as a collaboration with L’Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France in the 14/15 season. Last year, he conducted several concerts as a tribute to Witold Lutosławski, including a concert with the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra which was chosen to be published on the CD of the Lutosławski Jubilee Concerts.

He conducted his BBC Proms debut in 2001, and has also appeared at the Aldeburgh, Bath International, Holland, Strasbourg Musica, Oslo Ultima, Monte Carlo Le Printemps des Arts, Nice Manca, Paris Ircam Agora, Radio-France Présences, Perth and Sydney festivals.
JAMES WEEKS, CONDUCTOR
Weeks enjoys a growing international reputation both for his own music and for his consummate performances of contemporary repertoire.
Born in Blackburn in 1978, he read Music at Cambridge before completing a PhD in Composition at Southampton University, studying with Michael Finnissy. His music has been commissioned and performed by many leading performers including London Sinfonietta, Apartment House, Quatuor Bozzini, Alison Balsom, EXAUDI, Morgan/Dullea, Wandelweiser, New London Chamber Choir, Uroboros Ensemble, Endymion, Anton Lukoszevieze and Christopher Redgate. He has been performed at UK and European festivals and venues including City of London, Spitalfields and Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festivals, Gaudeamus (Amsterdam), Quincena Musical (San Sebastian), de Bijloke (Ghent), Wandelweiser (Düsseldorf, Munich), Weimarer Frühjahrstage and Mafra (Portugal). His music is heard regularly on BBC Radio 3’s Hear and Now, and in 2012 he signed to University of York Music Press.
As a conductor, he is best known for his work with the contemporary specialists EXAUDI www.exaudi.org.uk, the vocal ensemble he founded with the soprano Juliet Fraser in 2002. With them he maintains a busy international touring schedule, collaborating regularly with the world’s leading composers, new music soloists and ensembles, and has released six acclaimed CDs, of Finnissy, Fox, Lutyens and Skempton on Mode, NMC and Metier. The ensemble specialises in the most complex new music – performances of Ferneyhough, Dillon, Xenakis, Gervasoni, Birtwistle and Finnissy have won them worldwide praise – and experimental music, often presented alongside repertoire from the Renaissance or early baroque.
